Shaolin Kung Fu
Originating from the Shaolin Monastery in central China,
legendary as being the birthplace of the martial arts in
China. Shaolin Kung fu is a 'long fist' fighting system,
meaning that it emphasises lower stances and a long-range attack
and defence, with many high kicks requiring strength and
flexibility. As well as empty hand forms the Shaolin Kung Fu
system also incorporates a multitude of weapons, including the
straight sword, sabre, spear, staff, whip, chain whip and meteor
hammer to name a few.
Made popular in the west by Wheel of Life stage show where the
Monks of Shaolin perform amazing feats of strength and skill of
superhuman proportions. Jet Li whose style is based on
Shaolin Kung fu is great representative of how this style should
look and how it can be used, this is a martial art for people
wishing to learn an art as well as for self defence and
fitness.
